Keep it simple is the golden rule of web design. Trust me!

Do's
Look at other sites you use and like. Borrow their best ideas
Use as few graphics as possible
Use a standard 'title bar, menu on the left' approach
Use one or two fonts only

Don'ts
Never use blinking or scrolling text
Never use more than 1 or 2 banner adverts on a page
Don't use graphics where text is just as good
Don't use graphics over 10KB without a very good reason
No music - please!
